I swear by self-hypnosis for this problem. I've taken all the herbs listed -which are good general relaxers- and tried "everything" but what cured my anxiety and panic was self-hypnosis. It's just tapping into the power of your own mind and changing your anxiety response (which is subconscious). Your own thoughts are causing your pounding heart, sweaty palms, faintness, feeling of wanting to escape. Telling yourself to relax doesn't work- you have to make it so it comes naturally, without even thinking about it.
References :
You can take herbs and some natural supplements to counter act the effects of stress and anxiety but they won't get rid of the source of the stress or the manifestation caused from the stress.
Mentally we perceive the overdose of stress and allow it to manifest physically. It's strange but true. There are no herbs or natural physical remedies to stop this process. All the things we put in your mouth can help to get rid of the results of the stress but not the cause. What your looking for is how to release the trigger of emotions created from the stress. Each time we re experience an old memory that was stressful to us, we react to that memory as though it was happening now. We may not have a conscious memory but we still react. I've used mantra meditation for years to get rid of the reaction of the mind to past stress overloads. It works great. Stay calm and alert without reacting to life. Switch modes, become a person who acts with a focused, dynamic mind.
References :
I manage my stress best with yoga, meditation, hypnotherapy and exercise.

Simply quieting my mind through breathing during yoga and meditation was very helpful while my son was in Iraq. Although my anxiety level was extremely high, I did not have my issues as long as I practiced Yoga every other day. I also have a set of hypnotherapy cd's that I use on a regular basis. They were created by Dr. Terry Kile at quantumjoy@hotmail.com.
References :
Try brewing Valeriana Root into a tea. It's powerful though, so try a low dose at first. I have severe anxiety and this is my little miracle. You can buy it and learn more about it at www.salviasupply.com, look on the right hand side about halfway down the list. I should warn you it smells terrible, but it doesn't taste bad especially with a teaspoon of sugar. Good luck!
References :
If you have trouble with anxiety, there is a supplement out there that I have found to be absolutely one of the best things. I had problems with anxiety, too, and nothing (from ativan, clorazepam aka klonopin, to xanax, etc) helped. Also, I did not want to be "drugged up" all the time, and was very wary of the physical and psychological dependencies that can occur with these drugs.

A doctor recommended that I try taking the supplement GABA, and I have not had problems with anxiety since then. I have found that it makes me feel calmer and more in control without feeling stupid, sleepy, or drugged. I would strongly, strongly recommend that you give it a try. i have also tried valerian root and did not find it particularly beneficial, but the GABA has truly worked wonders. I have since heard from other friends who have had similar problems, and some of their doctors have also recommended they try GABA.

You can find it at your local health food store, like a GNC, or you can also find it online at iherb.com or vitaminshoppe.com. It is not very expensive and is only about $11 per bottle of 90 tablets, which will last you through 3 months.

Other supplements that are used in treating symptoms of anxiety or stress are B complex vitamins, kava kava, valerian root, and holy basil, l-tyrosine, and theanine. Holy basil is purported to be excellent, kava kava can be good, but I do not personally recommend valerian root. Taking a multivitamin has been shown in some studies to reduce symptoms of stress and anxiety, too.
References :
Try St. John's Wort. It has very reputable results as an anti-stress/anti-anxiety remedy. You can buy it in a tea form. And try some deep breathing exercises when you feel especially stressed. (Breathe in through your nose for a count of 4, hold it for a count of 7, breathe out through your mouth for a count of 8).
References :
Personal experience
